Welcome to the MMPL webpage.
We investigate functional solid materials at atomic level, probing how atoms and electronic spins order and interplay, for the purpose of uncovering novel properties. Our experimental specialty is in neutron scattering, which exploits the quantum physical wave nature of the particles. The interference of neutron waves scattered off solid materials provides us with invaluable insights into spatial and temporal correlations among constituent atoms as well as their magnetic moments.


Our research interests

We are interested in structure-property relationship in electronic and/or magnetic materials. The specific systems we are interested in include:
     - Spin order and disorder in geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets
     - Competitions between lattice and spin degrees of freedom
     - Magnetic order and dynamics of magnetoelectric multiferroics
     - Lattice dynamics and electron-lattice interactions
     - Exchange couplings in magnetic semiconductors

Whereas spatial orientations of electronic angular momenta are typically determined via exchange interactions, unconventional spin correlations may be established when there are competitions between multiple exchanges or the spin correlations couple to different degrees of freedom. Examples include incommensurate helical order or geometrical frustration that often lead to non-thermal fluctuations at zero temperature. We investigate these novel spin correlations and their time-dependent fluctuations using neutron scattering methods.
